In custom lapel pins, custom coins, or custom medals, there is often an epoxy-coated soft enamel that attempts to mimic the look of hard enamel, but there are still some significant differences between them:
1、Hardness and feel:
The enamel layer of soft enamel with epoxy coating is usually thinner and softer because it is a wet enamel process, which makes it softer to the touch and not as hard as hard enamel.
Hard enamel has a harder feel due to its dry enamel properties, similar to glass or ceramics.
2、Craftsmanship:
The process of making soft enamel with epoxy coating involves dividing a metal frame into different areas with fine lines, then filling these areas with colored enamel powder and firing it at high temperatures. This process makes the enamel layer of soft enamel with epoxy coating relatively thin.
The process of making hard enamel usually involves coating a metal surface with thick enamel powder and firing it at high temperatures to form a hard enamel layer. This process results in a thicker enamel layer for hard enamel.
3、Durability:
Because the enamel layer of hard enamel is thicker and harder, it generally has better durability and resistance to wear and tear, and is relatively less susceptible to scratches or damage.
The enamel layer of soft enamel plus epoxy coating is thin and soft, may be relatively fragile, and is easily affected by external forces and may cause scratches or wear.
So while soft enamels with epoxy coating can attempt to mimic the appearance of hard enamels, there are still clear differences in terms of hardness, feel and durability.
